Betsy is now almost run-in Monday, February 14 @ 21:51:53 GMT by Gareth (585 reads) | After the completion of the engine rebuild, and refitting of the unit. I have now completed several laps of the M60/Handforth bypass route!! and the result is she now has 350 miles on the new engine and gear box.
It is now running very nicely, no smoke, no knocking, no wheezing, plenty of power (well, comparitively anyway).
The only bug is a small oil leak on the sump gasket. These are notoriously bad design and it will probably leak for ever more no matter what I do.
The gearbox is very sweet indeed. Much quieter than the previous s2 box.
I shall be doing the 500 mile oil and filter change, and re-torqueing the cylinder head bolts this coming weekend. After that, she will be ready for action.
Anyone up for a greenlane trip around the peaks before end of Feb??

Betsy rides again. Wednesday, January 26 @ 22:22:23 GMT by Gareth (519 reads) | Well she runs and drives! Spent this evening putting all the seatbox, seats and floors back in.
Went for a very cautious run around the block, put some fuel in, and then did a 10 mile run. Only two problems that became apparent were an oil leak from a pipe union. This stopped when I tightened it up a bit, and a leaking radiator cap.
She runs fantastic. Very smooth and quiet, and has much more pulling power. I have to do 500 miles running in, so will be going for a long drive at the weekend.
The original (rebuilt) gearbox is also very good. The box is quiet, although a bit notchy to change gear. I suspect that this due to all the new bearings and bits that need to bed in.
It is much better to have the proper box for the vehicle. The 1st and 2nd gears are much lower geared on this box. It makes it much easier to pull away. 1st gear is also very quiet now compared with the series 2 box that I was using.
Only job to do now is to refit the new front propshaft before she can go for a play in the mud.

Engine now in and running Sunday, January 23 @ 17:10:00 GMT by Gareth (490 reads) | After a long cold (but thankfully dry) day, Betsy has now benn reunited with her overhauled engine and gearbox. I'm relieved to say she purrs like a kitten.
I had a couple of hiccups on the way, first I forgot to loosely fit the left hand engine mounting before lowering the engine into place, this is impossible to get in when the engine is in position, so out it came again! second problem was a leaky thermostat housing and temp switch (funny those, I never dismantled them). All soon cured.
Filled with fresh QUALITY oil (none of the B&Q crap from now on),and cranked it over with the plugs removed to pump up some oil pressure. After about 20 seconds of cranking, the pressure came up to about 55 psi which is spot on what it should be.
Then I put in some new spark plugs, connected up the ht leads and the coil, and switched her on. I nervously pressed the button and she fired up after about 10 seconds. Amazingly, the only adjustment required was the idle mixture. The oil pressure is much better at 55psi - 65 psi.
I ran out of daylight before I could fit the seatbox, seats and floors. So keep tuned for the next installment.

All systems go for Sunday Friday, January 21 @ 14:14:23 GMT by webmaster (468 reads) | Gareth writes "The engine overhaul is now back on track, after a bit of an accident the other day when the vacuum unit got smashed. I was very worried that a new part was unobtainable, but the trusty parts supplier has come up with a brand new unit.
So, weather permitting, engine goes in on Sunday."

New Engine goes in on Sunday Wednesday, January 19 @ 13:30:31 GMT by webmaster (501 reads) | Gareth writes "Betsy will be re-united with her freshly reconditioned engine on Sunday weather permitting.
Had a bit of a mishap the other day when the engine hoist was been folded away after lifting the engine off its stand, one of the very heavy legs fell and struch the distributor sire of the engine a smashed the vacuum advance unit off.
These parts are very hard to obtain, and I have spent most of this week on the phone trying to locate one. Glad to say that a new one will arrive on Monday, so the engine will be refitted but not able to run until next week.
The original overhauled gearbox is now fitted, and its all systems go for the final push this weekend.
Lets pray for decent weather."
